Can Unrestricted Density-Functional Theory Describe Open Shell Singlet Biradicals?

چکیده
Unrestricted density functional theory (UDFT) can be used for the description of open-shell singlet (OSS) biradicals provided a number of precautions are considered. Biradicals that require a two-determinantal wave function (e.g. OSS state of carbenes) cannot be described by UDFT for principal reasons. However, if the overlap between the open-shell orbitals is small (the single electrons are located at different atomic centers) errors become small and, then, the principal failure of UDFT in these cases is not apparent and may even be disguised by the fact that UDFT has the advantage of describing spin polarization better than any restricted open shell DFT method. In the case of OSS biradicals with twoor multiconfigurational character (but a onedeterminantal form of the leading configuration), reasonable results can be obtained by broken-symmetry (BS)-UDFT, however in each case this has to be checked. In no case is it reasonable to lower the symmetry of a molecule to get a suitable UDFT description. Hybrid functionals such as B3LYP perform better than pure DFT functionals in BS-UDFT calculations because the former reduce the self-interaction error of DFT exchange functionals, which mimics unspecified static electron correlation effects, so that the inclusion of specific static electron correlation effects via the form of the wavefunction becomes more effective.

A DFT study of the hyperfine coupling constants of triplet carbenes and biradicals
Motivated by our recent investigation of spin–orbit mixing in the simplest singlet carbene, HCF, we report Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations of the isotropic and anisotropic hyperfine coupling constants (HFCCs) of HCF ð ~ a3A00 Þ and other important triplet carbenes and biradicals. We conducted extensive DFT calculations on the prototypical triplet carbene, CH2, and compare our resul...

The electronic ground states of the recently synthesized stable nonacene derivatives (J. Am. Chem. It is the bulky protecting groups, not the transfer...
متن کاملExcited state geometries within time-dependent and restricted open-shell density functional theories
Singlet excited state geometries of a set of medium sized molecules with different characteristic lowest excitations are studied. Geometry optimizations of excited states are performed with two closely related restricted open-shell Kohn-Sham methods and within linear response to time-dependent density functional theory. The results are compared to wave-function based methods. Excitation energie...

The accuracy of excited states calculated with Kohn-Sham density functional theory using the maximum overlap method has been assessed for the calculation of adiabatic excitation energies, excited state structures, and excited state harmonic and anharmonic vibrational frequencies for open-shell singlet excited states. The computed Kohn-Sham adiabatic excitation energies are improved significantl...

We present a modified definition of the Electron Pair Localization Function (EPLF), initially defined within the framework of quantumMonteCarlo approaches [Scemama, A.; Caffarel,M.; Chaquin, P. J. Chem. Phys. 2004, 121, 1725] to be used in Density Functional Theories (DFT) and ab initiowave-function-based methods.
